Penallt no longer a broadband backwater!

Much has been reported about the Openreach Community Fibre Partnership over the last couple of years. The scheme to bring ultrafast fibre broadband to all 140 village properties served by “cabinet 20” in Lone Lane is now over and large numbers of residents are today enjoying download speeds of up to 950 Mbps (depending on which package is chosen). Some teething problems with final connections remain but these are expected to be resolved shortly.

Steering Group members Steve Davis, Rachael Geddes and David May (Lance Rowell and Simon Angell absent)

Pelham Hall was one of the last places to benefit from the scheme and it wasn’t until November 2nd that Penallt’s village hall was finally connected, seeing a 250-fold speed increase from the previous 0.4 Mbps as a result! Plans to develop the Hall as a community hub are now looking more realistic as a result.

Previously, the great majority of properties in The Birches area (to the north of the village) and Tregagle (to the south) had, over time, also been upgraded to fibre by Openreach. Aggregating all the areas, and according to Openreach’s own data, Penallt now has some 95% of its properties able to subscribe to ultrafast broadband. The village is no longer a broadband backwater!

Those unsure of whether or not they are in the 95% coverage mentioned above can check their status by entering address details into Fibre broadband | Openreach
