Film Night Programme - Autumn 2023
Pelham Hall is pleased to announce the Autumn 2023 Film Night programme - three strong new titles and one cult classic which we hope you’ll enjoy!
Friday 22nd September: WHAT’S LOVE GOT TO DO WITH IT [12A] 108 mins – Comedy/Romance
How do you find lasting love in today's world? For documentary-maker and dating app addict Zoe (Lily James), swiping right has only delivered an endless stream of Mr Wrongs, to the dismay of her eccentric mother Cath (Emma Thompson). For Zoe's childhood friend and neighbour Kaz (Shazad Latif), the answer is to follow his parents' example and opt for an arranged (or "assisted") marriage to a bright and beautiful bride from Pakistan.
As Zoe films his hopeful journey from London to Lahore to marry a stranger chosen by his parents, she begins to wonder if she might have something to learn from a profoundly different approach to finding love.
Why see it? Don’t we all need a rom-com as the nights draw in?

Friday 20th October: LOCAL HERO (1983) [PG] 119 mins – Comedy/Drama
To celebrate its 40th anniversary. An American oil billionaire (Burt Lancaster) sends young executive Mac to a remote Scottish village to secure the property rights for a new oil refinery. At first things go well as the locals are keen to get their hands on the 'Silver Dollar' and can't believe their luck. However, a local hermit, Ben Knox, owns part of the beach and refuses to sell.
Why see it? It’s essentially an Ealing comedy updated for the Opec era; equal parts Whisky Galore and Passport to Pimlico in its celebration of eccentric but worldly characters putting one over on the faceless giants of the world. Now a cult classic.
And the guitar soundtrack made Mark Knopfler famous too …

Monday 27th November: BARBIE [12A] 114 mins – Comedy/Fantasy
NB Note the Monday date
“To live in Barbie Land is to be a perfect being in a perfect place. Unless you have a full-on existential crisis. Or you’re a Ken.” Barbie (Margot Robbie) and Ken (Ryan Gosling) are having the time of their lives in the colourful and seemingly perfect world of Barbie Land. However, when they get a chance to go to the real world, they soon discover the joys and perils of living among humans.
Why see it? A pitch-perfect script backed by great performances – particularly from Ryan Gosling – turns what could be a simple studio comedy into a sharp commentary on our society.

Friday 15th December: OPPENHEIMER [15] 180 mins – History/Drama
Film starts at 7.00 pm rather than 7.30 pm
Based on the 2005 biography American Prometheus Christopher Nolan’s eagerly awaited feature is the story of J. Robert Oppenheimer, “the father of the atomic bomb”, an enigmatic man who must risk destroying the world in order to save it.
Why see it? The combination of Christopher Nolan, a fantastic cast and a riveting story.
“Arguably Nolan’s most impressive work yet in the way it combines his acknowledged visual mastery with one of the deepest character dives in recent American cinema.” Los Angeles Times
