Speed check cables in the village after 20 mph limit imposed
Pairs of parallel cables have recently appeared crossing the road at two sites in the village. These have been installed at the instigation of our two County Councillors who asked MCC to measure the speed of traffic through a number of villages, including Penallt, in the Mitchel Troy and TUCC areas.
"The black speed loops will be on the road for a week and then removed. The data will show the speed of traffic and provide evidence as to the impact of lower speed limits in the villages and whether there are issues that require further intervention."
The two sites selected are labelled Site 1 (just south of the Croes Faen crossroads) and Site 2 (near the top of Glyn Road) on the map shown.
The survey was conducted between 6th and 13th June 2024, a period of 7 days in all.
The results from these surveys have now been published and a summary is given below.
Site 1: the average speed of vehicles was about 3 to 4 mph over the 20 mph limit, with speeds being a little higher approaching the crossroads (going north) than leaving them (going south).
15% of all vehicles were travelling some 8 or 9 mph above the limit whilst 5% were approximately 12 mph above the limit.
Site 2: the average sped of vehicles was about the same as the 20 mph limit, with little difference between those going north or south.
15% of all vehicles were travelling some 4 mph above the limit whilst 5% were approximately 7 mph above the limit.
Traffic density
The survey also detected the times when vehicles passed through the two sites during the seven days of the survey and a large amount of detailed data were obtained.
For clarity, the results have been condensed to show average vehicles per hour during three-hour periods throughout the day. A distinction is also made between vehicles going north and those going south. Site 2 had about half as much traffic as Site 1.
